1 Billion Rising 2016
On Friday February 12 for the fourth year in a row Surry Hills became a sight for 1 Billion Rising.
What is One Billion Rising? Astonishingly, not many people in Australia are aware of this biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history.
The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2013 by Eve Ensler, the creator of the world famous play Vagina Monologues, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
Now every year in February people across the world come together to express their outrage and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer. One Billion Rising aims to create a culture shift and empower men and women around the globe to fight the status quo of culture of abuse and say NO to violence in all its forms.
Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre and the cutting edge contamporary dance school SEET Dance have been bringing this event to Sydney from the very first year of the campaign. Charemaine Seet, the choreographer of SEET Dance, and her beautiful dancers headlined the event by creating, performing and then teaching a powerful dance to all the gathered revolution/ries. This year Surry Hills was rising to Janelle Monae’s vision/ry song “Electric Lady”.
Greens MP for NSW Jenny Leong joined the event and opened it with a speech of support for the cause – we extend our gratitude to her! And also we thank Sara Lubowitz who mc’ed the uprising, Alia Ardon, a youth representative and speaker, Diane Mcdon/.d for photography, Russell Cole (of Sydney Def Jam),DJ Adverse (Adam Close) of the Groove Dealers, DJs Krystel Diola and Amity, and street dancers Adam Warburton and his crew. And big thank you to Charemaine and Michael of SEET Dance !
Surry Hills uprisings received many messages of support:
