The Northcott Community Shed
The Surry Hills Northcott Community Shed is a collaborative community development project being facilitated by Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre in collaboration with Housing NSW, NSW Land and Housing Corporation, St Vincent’s Hospital Inner City Health Program & Surry Hills Public Tenants Association (SHPTA).
The NSW Land and Housing Corporation has given the Surry Hills community a rare opportunity to develop the shed through a favourable lease of the shed site. The initial grant from the NSW Premier and Cabinet Community Development Grant will enable the structural renovations to an existing building. We have already made an application for additional funding to complete the necessary modifications, such as upgrading the electrical connections and plumbing of the shed and acquiring basic equipment and materials.
The Shed will be used for multi-purpose activities complementary to the existing Northcott Community Centre and Community Garden. The Surry Hills Northcott Community Shed will provide a space for community members to meet, socialise, engage and interact in a range of creative and vocational activities.
Using a community development approach, the project aims to improve community safety and engagement by building community capacity and social cohesion, strengthening informal networks and enhancing community structures. At all stages the ongoing processes of engagement, liaison and consultation with residents and other community stakeholders will be paramount to the integrity and success of this project.
