Become a Volunteer

The Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre (SHNC) relies on volunteers and members. Without volunteers, we would not be able to deliver essential services to our community. The Centre receives funding and other support from all tiers of government, but this resourcing alone is insufficient. As a volunteer with SHNC you will have the opportunity to use valuable skills and experience and have a positive impact on your local community. You will also reap personal benefits from being active, socially engaged and enjoy a sense of fulfilment. Become a volunteer today!

We engage volunteers in almost all of our activities. For example, volunteers help in the office and they help with our activities and events. Every year over 100 volunteers are involved in the Surry Hills Festival. Without those volunteers, the festival could not take place, and the funds raised would not be available to support the Centre’s community activities.

Our Governance Committee (GC) is made up entirely of volunteers. Consisting of 4 office bearers and 4 others,  the GC requires people who are prepared to contribute their skills and time to the management and strategic planning of the SHNC. The GC meets once a month, but members need to be available to do some work outside of these meetings. You will need to be nominated for the GC at an Annual General Meeting. If there are too many nominations, there may be a ballot, but this is rare. Vacancies in the GC can be filled at any time. Make your interests known! More information on the Governance Committee here – Governance Committee.

Anyone can volunteer with the SHNC and we encourage you to become a member first – Membership Application!

Tp become a volunteer all you need to do is fill in the Volunteer Registration Form, and send it to admin@shnc.org or take it to the Centre. Make sure you show what sort of work you would like to do for the Centre as this assists us to place you in a volunteer role that you enjoy.
